University of South Australia Scholarships – The University of South Australia is offering fully funded opportunities for international applicants. Research Training Program international (RTPi) Scholarships

Research Training Program international (RTPi) Scholarships are funded by the Australian Government and awarded to international students on the basis of academic merit and research potential.  These scholarships include a stipend (living allowance) and a fee offset for a limited time.

Value

The total stipend is at least $32,500 per annum (2023 stipend rate) paid fortnightly over a maximum of 3 years for PhD students and over a maximum 2 years for Master of Research students.  The total fee-waiver is for a maximum of 3 years for PhD students and over a maximum 2 years for Master of Research students.  This scholarship includes Overseas Student Health Cover (Singles Cover) with UniSA’s preferred provider BUPA where the successful applicant requires a student visa.  A thesis allowance is available.  Please read your offer carefully to ensure that it is right for you.

Enterprise Research Scholarship (ERS)

Enterprise Research Scholarships (ERS) are funded by the University and/ or our partners, and are awarded to international students on the basis of academic merit and research potential.  These scholarships include a stipend (living allowance) and a fee offset for a limited time.

Value

Enterprise Research Scholarship (ERS)

International Research Tuition Scholarships (IRTS) are awarded to international students on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated research capability, and who will be supported during their degree by a full living stipend supported by external funding, e.g a recognised sponsor or external scholarship awarding body.

Value

The IRTS total fee-waiver is for a maximum of 4 years for PhD students and over a maximum 2 years for Master of Research students.  This scholarship does not include Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) which is a condition of the student visa, and applicants are responsible for ensuring they have appropriate cover for themselves and their family where applicable.

Eligibility

In addition to meeting UniSA’s eligibility criteria, applicants must be:

  • Commencing international research degree students
  • High quality with demonstrated research capability, as assessed by UniSA
  • Be supported by a strong supervisory panel(with end-user adviser on the supervisory panel, where appropriate), and be enrolled in a research-rich environment
  • In receipt of (or been awarded) a fully externally funded stipend scholarship, or in receipt of a living stipend supported by external funding*.

Scholarship Benefits and Conditions

The following are the additional benefits and conditions in addition to those detailed in the policy and related procedures AB-59 Research Degrees and RTP Scholarships. Please ensure that you have familiarised yourself with the content of this policy prior to reading this document.

These benefits are relevant to awardees of the stipend (living allowance) scholarships Research Training Program domestic (RTPd), Research Training Program international (RTPi) and the Enterprise Research Scholarship (ERS) where the offer of admission was made on or after 7th March 2022.

  • Tuition fees: A full-time equivalent fee offset of up to 4 years for a Doctoral program, and 2 years for a Masters by Research program. Once the fee offset period ends, you will be liable for ongoing tuition fees.
  • Stipend scholarship: A full-time base stipend (living allowance) rate as published by the Australian Government, unless otherwise specified in your letter of offer. The stipend is available for up to 3 years for a Doctoral program or a maximum of 2 years for a Masters by Research program. Once the stipend scholarship ends, you will be liable for all living expenses.
  • Recreation leave: Research degree students are entitled to receive up to 20 working days paid recreation leave for each year of the stipend. This paid recreation leave may be accrued over the life of the stipend but will be forfeited when the stipend is terminated. A student’s maximum period of support is not increased with this leave type.
  • Sick leave: Research degree students are entitled to receive up to 10 working days paid annual sick leave for each year of the stipend. This paid sick leave may be accrued over the life of the stipend but will be forfeited when the stipend is terminated. A student’s maximum period of support is not increased because of this leave.
  • Additional paid sick leave: Research degree students may also receive additional paid sick leave up to a total of 60 working days over the life of their stipend where the student has insufficient annual sick leave entitlements available, provided that a medical certificate has been provided by the student. The maximum period of support for a student receiving a stipend is increased where this leave is utilised.
  • Carer’s leave: Annual sick leave entitlements (including additional paid sick leave) may be used to cover leave for research degree students with family caring responsibilities.
  • Maternity leave: Research degree students who have completed 12 months of their stipend will be entitled to 60 working days paid maternity leave during the stipend period. Paid leave may also be approved if the student has adopted a child. The maximum period of support for a student receiving a stipend is increased where this leave is utilised. Research degree students will only be allowed one period of maternity leave during their candidature.
  • Parental leave: Research degree students who have completed 12 months of their stipend will be entitled to 10 working days paid parental leave at the time of the birth or adoption. The maximum period of support for a student receiving a stipend is increased where this leave is utilised.
  • Relocation allowance: In the case of scholarship holders relocating their place of residence to take up their research degree position in Adelaide, economy or student concession airfares or kilometre allowance for car travel will be provided.
  • Jury duty: Research degree students receiving a stipend will continue to receive their regular stipend throughout the period of jury service. The maximum period of support for a research degree student receiving a stipend is increased where this leave is utilised.
  • Thesis allowance: A thesis allowance is available to assist with the costs associated with the production and preparation of the thesis. The maximum allowance is AUD$420 for a Masters thesis and AUD$840 for a Doctoral thesis. The thesis allowance is not available to students awarded an International Research Tuition Scholarship (IRTS).
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): International students who require a student visa to study in Australia are eligible to receive OSHC from the University’s preferred supplier where they receive a scholarship that includes a stipend. Students not on a student visa are not eligible to receive OSHC from the University. University funded OSHC is not available to students awarded an International Research Tuition Scholarship (IRTS).
  • School Education for dependants: Student visa holders who are in receipt of a scholarship that includes a fee waiver may be entitled to receive a tuition fee waiver for any of their children attending government primary and secondary schools in Australia.

Scholarship Condition

  • Study eligibility: All students must hold the right to study in Australia. International students are required to either hold a visa with study rights that covers the entire period of study, or provide evidence of their application for an appropriate visa AND hold a visa with study rights until the expected approval of the appropriate visa. Students who do not hold an appropriate visa for the full length of their period of study are able to take up their scholarship at the discretion of the Manager: Applications and Admissions, Student and Academic Services, or their delegated authority.
  • Commonwealth acknowledgement: If you publish or produce material such as books, articles, newsletters or other literary or artistic works which relate to your research project you must acknowledge the Commonwealth’s contribution in a prominent place and in an appropriate fashion. The acknowledgement must include the mention of your support through an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship.
  • Legal advice: All students are strongly urged to seek their own independent legal advice regarding Intellectual Property and other contractual arrangements, both with the University and any external parties.
